The minerals extracted from its mines \u2013gold, tin, tantalum and tungsten\u2013 are hidden inside our phones, tablets and computers.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n8fHYjrjMOY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Armed groups<\/strong> mine, process and sell these minerals, using the profits from their exploitation and illegal trafficking to buy more weapons to perpetuate<strong> the deadliest conflict since World War II<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are 2.7 million displaced people living in the Democratic Republic of Congo in this climate of tension and instability, including children who have lost family members, their homes and the place where they could play and grow: school.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff3300;\">An estimated 3.5 million school-age children (6 to 11) and about 5 million adolescents (12 to 17) do not attend school.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"anchor-escuela\"><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff3300; font-family: Georgia,Times New Roman,Times,serif; font-size: x-large;\"><b>Blank years: <\/b>Years with no school<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1841\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/nino-escuela.jpg\" alt=\"nino escuela\" width=\"204\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/nino-escuela.jpg 204w, https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/nino-escuela-145x300.jpg 145w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI now have three blank years (without school). We have nothing but war. The war is every day. I don\u2019t have the means to study. I can\u2019t even buy a pen! So there\u2019s no opportunity for me to study\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Growing up without a quality education is the fate of many children displaced by war in North Kivu, where the Jesuit Refugee Service, ALBOAN\u2019s partner organisation, focuses its efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons are many:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many families cannot pay the costs of schooling.<\/li>\n<li>In other families, children must work to survive.<\/li>\n<li>Orphans and unaccompanied children often have to fend for themselves and sometimes have to take care of their younger siblings.<\/li>\n<li>In other cases, armed groups have destroyed school buildings and there are no safe spaces for children to learn.<\/li>\n<li>Many girls and adolescents are forced to marry and leave school.<\/li>\n<li>Many teachers do not receive salaries and end up quitting. At any rate, education is a fundamental and absolutely necessary right for a bright future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span id=\"anchor-educacion\"><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff3300; font-family: Georgia,Times New Roman,Times,serif; font-size: x-large;\">Education is all about dignity<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI believe that education is all about dignity. It has to do with providing children \u2013 who have nothing\u2013 a way to participate in the society around them, safe from the violence in which they are immersed\u201d, <\/em><em>says Sister Esperance Hamuli, education coordinator at the Jesuit Refugee Service in Masisi.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Education offers normalcy and order for children who have fled their homes, who have watched their relatives die and who have experienced the constant threat of violence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education not only teaches materials, but is crucial for building a different type of society in DR Congo.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is why ALBOAN, the Jesuit NGO in the Basque Country and Navarre, works in eastern Congo to promote education wherever it is needed, providing support to the Jesuit Refugee Service-Great Lakes for the management of educational services in IDP camps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New schools and school supplies<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Teacher training and recruitment <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Literacy courses, vocational training and teaching them about their rights <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Creation of parent associations that become involved in the educational process<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Psychosocial support for adolescents and women who are victims of violence<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ninos-escuela.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[2131]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1842 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ninos-escuela.jpg\" alt=\"ninos escuela\" width=\"539\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ninos-escuela.jpg 595w, https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ninos-escuela-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 539px) 100vw, 539px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"anchor-colabora\"><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"anchor-colabora\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff3300; font-family: Georgia,Times New Roman,Times,serif; font-size: x-large;\"><b>How can you help?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alboan.org\/registro\/donativos-educacion-congo.asp?web=1\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1878 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/boton-donacion.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[2131]\" alt=\"boton donacion\" width=\"211\" height=\"63\" \/><\/a>Your contribution will help us move forward with <strong>educational projects that help children and adolescents in IDP camps<\/strong>.
