Did you know that your mobile phone is linked to all this violence? The Congo is rich in minerals needed to make mobile phones, tablets\u2026and armed groups would be unable to prolong the conflict without the money generated from the illegal sale of these minerals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">As a result, ALBOAN wants to place the spotlight on the many forms of exploitation and violence against women that are generated by this conflict and make the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) the WORST PLACE IN THE WORLD TO BE A WOMAN.. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #990033; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/mujer-bebe2.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[2136]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/mujer-bebe2-155x300.jpg\" alt=\"mujer bebe2\" width=\"155\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/mujer-bebe2-155x300.jpg 155w, https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/mujer-bebe2.jpg 301w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" \/><\/a>GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL EXPLOITATION<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">Women are consistently the victims of rape and abuse by all armed groups in a conflict and by men in IDP (internally displaced person) camps. In addition to psychological trauma, these women often contract serious diseases like AIDS. Many, due to the lack of resources in the camps, are forced into prostitution in order to survive. To make matters worse, society stigmatises and excludes these victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #990033; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">EXPLOITATION OF LABOUR<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">With no means of earning a living and families to take care of, many women are forced to take jobs as porters in the mines. Without any form of workplace safety these women work in conditions of semi-slavery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #990033; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">EXPLOITATION OF EDUCATION<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">Displacement has created a large percentage of young girls who have never attended school. Uneducated and unemployed, they end up taking care of other family\u2019s children and household chores.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"anchor-congo\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cc0033; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">What do we do at ALBOAN to support women in eastern Congo?<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: large;\"><b>Any project that wants put a stop to the chaos and impoverishment in the Congo will have to focus on women and their needs.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/mujer-trabajando.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[2136]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/mujer-trabajando.jpg\" alt=\"mujer trabajando\" width=\"230\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/mujer-trabajando.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/mujer-trabajando-164x300.jpg 164w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alboan.org\" target=\"_blank\">ALBOAN, the Jesuit NGO in the Basque Country and Navarre, works in eastern Congo to support the empowerment of women by backing the work of the Jesuit Refugee Service-Great Lakes (JRS) within IDP camps, promoting:<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">&#8211; Psychosocial support for adolescents and women who are victims of violence.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> &#8211; Literacy courses, vocational training (dressmaking, basketry, carpentry, hairdressing) and helping them learn about their rights.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> &#8211; Training adolescents who complete secondary school so that they can join the education network as teachers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">We have also joined forces with Synergies de Femmes (Synergie) to support women who are victims of sexual violence by:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">&#8211; Creating shelters where women can seek health care, psychosocial support, group therapy, a temporary roof, and the ability to learn a skill that enables them to achieve economic independence.<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8211; Training in skills that allow women to actively participate in decision-making processes, strengthening their leadership in defending their needs and interests and those of their communities.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"anchor-colabora\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cc0033; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">How can you help?<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/mujer-bebe.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[2136]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1478\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tecnologialibredeconflicto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/mujer-bebe.jpg\" alt=\"mujer bebe\" width=\"148\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a>You can collaborate in helping women who are victims of violence in eastern Congo with a financial contribution that will go to supporting ALBOAN\u2019s projects in the region. Your contribution can make a difference.
